Yes, if you join Land Search and Rescue groups or Coastguard New Zealand and undertake the necessary training including courses like tracking and search methods.

NZ Land Search and Rescue has over 3000 trained volunteers. There are roles for people with:

good basic bushcraft skills, reliable outdoor gear and reasonable fitness
computer networking, information management and/or key-boarding skills
radio or electronics skills.

Coastguard New Zealand has 1800 volunteers crewing 75 rescue vessels around the country. Coastguard members may:

crew rescue vessels
train as air observers on the Coastguard Air Patrols
run the search base headquarters
take roles in administration.

Not necessarily. Applicants with serious proven charges relating to specific drugs, dishonesty, violence, and sexual crimes, or recent, or multiple drink driving convictions are not eligible to join �־��. Applicants with less serious or one-off historic, convictions are considered on a case-by-case basis. As part of the selection process thorough background checks are conducted.

Every applicant is assessed according to his or her own merit.

Because of �־��'s commitment to reducing trauma on our roads, we need to set an example and will not recruit people for police officer positions if they have recent or multiple drink driving convictions.

Can I work in forensics during the holidays to get work experience?

No. In order to retain the integrity of a crime scene Police do not allow non-Police volunteers to work in forensic teams in crime scenes. However ESR, the Crown Research Institute that carries out forensic services for Police, does host some work experience and visits from schools in targeted and organised programmes.

Most Scene of Crime Officers (SOCOs) are police officers who have experience in the investigation of crime and have studied the relevant legislation. Some SOCO positions are offered as civilian roles and these are usually filled internally by Crime Scene Attendants.

Many universities offer relevant science courses and the Universities of Auckland and Otago offer forensic science courses. Your expertise will develop through work experience in your specialist field and on-the-job training.

Some roles can only be filled by police officers, but others may be filled by police employees.

Police employee forensic positions

Fingerprint Officers

May require a degree in science, mathematics or computer studies.
Qualification is through the Fingerprint Officer five year training programme, coordinated through Police National Headquarters and the Royal �־�� College. A genuine interest and understanding of forensic principles is expected and often science graduates are taken on as trainees.

Behavioural analysts

Need at least a Masters degree in psychology, with an emphasis on behavioural psychology, and some papers in criminology.

Electronic Crime Analysts

Trainee positions require at least a Bachelors degree or equivalent, as well as MCP, Network Plus and similar certifications, and relevant industry experience. Trainees enter a structured career development programme to qualify as analysts.

Document Examiners

Trainee positions require at least a Bachelors degree such as science, including chemistry papers; some have a Masters degree in forensic science.
Trainees qualify through an in-house structured career training programme.

Scene of Crime Officers (SOCOs)

May have completed a Certificate or Diploma in forensic science.
