Identification and prioritisationThe principal spoke with the SCO about the schools concerns in 2014. The school is surrounded by low-income families who cannot always afford approved child restraints. Most of the information came from direct observation by the traffic warden supervisors. There were also a couple of complaints from parents that students were not wearing approved child restraints when they were dropped off at school. Short-term goalParents will use approved child restraints when they transport their children to and from school. Long-term goalParents will use approved child restraints when they transport their children to and from school.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school reviewed its policy and procedures related to student travelling to and from school. The school patrols, traffic wardens, supervising school staff and parents were trained by Police to ensure consistent and safe use of the school crossing. They were also asked to identify parents whose children were not wearing child restraints when arriving at or leaving the school. An engineering solution included the placing of yellow no-parking lines around the school entrance and where the traffic wardens operate. Community connections Parents were informed about the school's policy and procedures relating to students travelling to and from school. Community connections were fostered with all the stakeholders in the area around the school (including the SCO, Auckland Transport, other local primary and intermediate schools and their boards of trustees, kindergartens, and parent groups) so that they would work together to improve traffic safety for students. Auckland Transport supported the intervention by running a Slow down back to school campaign, holding  HYPERLINK "https://at.govt.nz/cycling-walking/school-travel/travelwise/" Travelwise meetings with nearby primary schools, and arranging a booster seat workshop for parents. Police teams (the road policing team and the public safety team) supported the intervention by patrolling the target area and issuing infringement notices for illegal traffic behaviour, including transporting unrestrained children. Curriculum teaching and learning Students received lessons from the Road Safe programme for  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safe-years-0-1" years 01 and for  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safe-years-2-3" years 23. The main emphasis was how to stay safe in the car and on footpaths around the school. Students made posters with road safety messages Make it click and Booster rooster 149 cm were two slogans relating to restraints. ImpactThere has been some improvement in road safety practices around the school. Two families who were regular offenders received assistance to purchase an approved child restraint and are no longer offending. Traffic cones placed around the crossing resulted n a small decrease in the number of drivers who block the crossing when the school patrol is active. Road policing supervisors informed the SCO that they are now issuing fewer tickets in the area. Adding the yellow no-parking signs has improved pedestrian safety The relationship between students and Police has improved as students gained better understanding about why Police do what they do and how to avoid getting into trouble with Police.Next stepThe school will continue to build relationships between stakeholders to improve student safety, with clearly aligned goals, sharing of information and shared enforcement when necessary. The school will also continue to provide opportunities for students, drivers, pedestrians and the public to gain a better knowledge of safe road behaviour.ObstaclesThe only real obstacles were initial differences in opinions, and limited resources and time for both the school staff and stakeholders.ImprovementsThe intervention would be more effective if more time and effort was given to engage the community and increase parent and community involvement. ConclusionThe school is proud of the students engagement with Police, and hopes to build an ongoing, purposeful relationship with Police.
