These issues were identified through school community consultation questionnaires, a parent education night, the positive behaviour choice agreements, and observations by Police and Hutt City Council staff and the School Travel Planner. Short-term goalTo increase the safe environment for students travelling to and from school (currently they have four Walking School Buses with a total of 12 students joining in).Long-term goalTo have safe and active walkers going to/from school. Measured by: more Walking School Buses by the end of the year. evaluations done by parents/whnau show they feel safer with students walking safely together. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment Relevant school policies were reviewed and updated. A school travel plan was developed. The school's Social Worker introduced three Walking School Bus routes to get students to/from school. All staff were made aware of the Walking School Buses, and actively encouraged their students/whanau to use them. A new crossing point was installed near the school. All School Traffic Safety Team members were trained to ensure consistent safe crossing procedures for all students going to/from school. Staff who monitored the school patrols actively encouraged students/whanau to use the correct crossing points. Community connections Family and whnau were informed about the Walking School Bus through newsletters, and were eager to support this initiative. Hutt City Council facilitated the development of a school travel plan, and coordinated parking wardens to patrol areas around the school. Police monitored traffic behaviour around the school environment. Hutt City Council engineers, the school and Police worked together to make the area safer, including the installation of a new crossing point near the school. Curriculum teaching and learning The junior syndicate included road safety in their curriculum plans, and used activities based on the lessons in Police's  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Travelling Safely resources. Walking School Bus students were trained, and senior students actively encouraged to role-model safe walking. Student-led actions by senior students taking the lead role in Walking School Buses. Student-led actions by senior students identifying highest risk areas in relation to visibility in the crossing areas. Student-led role by senior students monitoring students at the previously unsupervised crossing point.ImpactImproved community consultation and home-school partnership through road safety, and contacting the family/whnau via newsletters, led to an increase in students using the Walking School Buses. Students are safer through the use of the Walking School Buses. Senior students taking an active role in leading Walking School Buses and monitoring the crossing point has enabled more students to be active and safe walkers to and from school.
