This was not an isolated event school staff had reported other unsafe driving and crossing practices.Identification and prioritisationThe incident, which was witnessed by students, parents and teachers highlighted the need for further education on student safety.Short-term goalParents and students will receive education on school gate safety and safe crossing and parking practices.Long-term goalThere will be a marked improvement in parents and students crossing and parking practices near the school gate.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole school approach included: School ethos and environment The school implemented improvements to road safety and training for the school traffic safety team. More school staff wearing high-visibility jackets were rostered to direct parents and students to use crossing points and to guide students to cars. A walking school bus was set up by teachers to take students home along a key route. Parents received regular traffic safety messages through the school newsletter. Community connections Police increased traffic monitoring and enforcement before and after school. Police and teachers spoke to the offending parents about the impact of their driving behaviour on other members of the school community. Curriculum teaching and learning Junior students received lessons from Police's  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" road safety resources about safe walking and crossing behaviour. Senior students received cycle safety education on road rules, including at pedestrian crossings. Additional student traffic wardens and staff supervisors were trained to oversee parking and crossing safety.ImpactAs a result of this intervention, there was an improvement in the overall parking and crossing behaviour of parents and students after school. This was confirmed by the observations of staff and supervisors.Next stepsThe next step is to monitor road user behavior, use Police enforcement when necessary, and maintain regular communication with parents about traffic safety expectations.ObstaclesParents were busy and some were opposed to the idea that they needed education.ImprovementsIf this intervention was repeated it would be useful to involve students in road safety issues and possible solutions to advocate for safe behaviours. This includes encouraging students to contribute to the school newsletter, which has a Road Patrol Update section where they could contribute their own stories and ideas.ConclusionThe school is proud of achieving an overall improvement in adults road use behaviour around the school, and changing attitudes so that parents now see road safety for all students as a shared responsibility. The school was also pleased with the ongoing support itreceived from Police.
