Leppien School Community Officer SummaryStudents are leaving school without a drivers licence.IssueLeaving school without a drivers licence was a barrier to employment for many of students who were less able academically. A survey by the school identified that many year 12 and 13 students did not have a licence. Some students were driving to school with no licence. Students were afraid to sit the driving test because of the high failure rates; a student who had failed the test once was unlikely to try again. For many students the cost of the driving test was beyond their means.Identification and prioritisationNumerous students were identified driving to school while unlicensed. The school was also having difficulty placing Gateway students into employment because they had no licence. Short-term goalAll year 13 students will gain their learners license.Long-term goalAll students will gain their learners license when they turned 16.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school set up a system by which students could pay $5 a week (or what they could afford) into their school account towards the fee for the driving test. Practice tests were set up in the learning centre for students to study in their lunch time. The school sought funding for the Gateway students driving test fees. Community connections Hastings Blue Light ran a driver education day and paid for 20 students to sit the driving test. Police assisted in the development and teaching of a driving course. Police and the school developed an understanding with the Hastings Vehicle Testing Station which meant that when students with reading or learning difficulties sat the test a police officer or teacher was able to sit with them and read for them. Curriculum teaching and learning The school set aside one week in which the Gateway class did intensive study of the road code questions. The students were individually taught the road code questions by the SCO, using memory aids to help retain the answers. Students were taken to the testing station immediately after the one-on-one sessions, while the information was fresh in their minds. When a student passed the test they were assigned to assist another student in their study.ImpactWhen the first student passed her driving test she returned to school saying how easy it was. This encouraged others to participate. By the end of the school year all the Gateway students had gained their learners licence. This also encouraged other students in the school to participate. This intervention had a 100 percent success rate all 70 students who sat the driving test passed. The well advertised success of this intervention has made it self-perpetuating. Parents are actively seeking places for their children and students are approaching staff asking to participate. The school and the SCO have also been asked to run this intervention in other schools.Next stepsThe school aims to run the intervention independently of Police for all year 12 and 13 students. A reward system will be established for the student mentors.ObstaclesThe fee for the test was a burden for many students. The school gained funding for some students and others gradually paid the money into their school account Weakness in literacy meant that these students perceived the test as difficult to pass. The successful pass rate of academically challenged students changed this belief over time. Many students had a fear of failure and it was not until the first student passed that others felt more confident about sitting the test. Many students did not know what resources they needed for the test or how to go about getting them. The school assisted students in getting their birth certificates and provided them with letters to prove their physical address. ImprovementsThe school has now set up a mentor scheme in which the students are now the teachers. These mentors do the one-on-one teaching, and the teacher takes the student to the testing station when they are ready to sit the test. The school encourages all students to get student identification as the identity requirement for drivers licenses has changed. The student ID has a photo as required and is much cheaper that a passport photo, which is the other alternative.ConclusionThe school is proud that their students are now more employable and are able to take their place as contributing members of society. There have also been gains for Police within the school, as the majority of interactions are now positive. Many students with learning difficulties have gone on to help other students, which has given them a great sense of pride and accomplishment. It is something many of them thought they would never achieve.
