Leppien School Community Officer SummaryIncreasing the safety of students walking to school. IssueIt was noticed on school trips that students showed very little road sense. Most of them travel to and from school in a vehicle. Their parents make all the decisions for them when they cross a road.Identification and prioritisationThe school was concerned about the safety of students going to and from school events. This is an ongoing because they often have to walk to events such as school swimming lessons.Short-term goalStudents will get to and from school events safely and without incident.Long-term goalStudents knowledge of road safety will be enhanced so that they are able manage themselves safely around roads.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The road outside the school is often congested in the mornings and afternoons because space for dropping students off and picking them up is limited. The presence of a preschool across the road from the school puts even more pressure on parking space. The school came together with the preschool to jointly encourage safer parking and driving behaviour in the parents of their students. The school is continually reviewing its policies on student safety. The school developed a safe walking programme and provided training for teachers to ensure that students would walk safely to and from external activities. Community connections Flyers were sent home to parents encouraging them to walk to school with their children. To develop students decision-making process, parents were encouraged to let their child make the choice on when to cross the road. Staff and parents manned the test course for the safe walking programme. The school is continuing to meet with the local council to further develop structures such as footpaths and pedestrian crossings around the school. Curriculum teaching and learning Safe walking lessons were taught to the junior school based on Police  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Road Safe resources and delivered by teachers and the SCO. A test was set up at the end of the programme in which students had to walk a course unsupervised.. Adults were present around the course to ensure students safety but students had to make all the decisions themselves. They were assessed at each point around the course on their ability to demonstrate each required skill. When they completed all the tasks correctly they received a safe walking licence. ImpactAs a result of this intervention the students are now more knowledgeable about road safety. They are using kea crossing points where available and are much more confident around the road. The students now have the knowledge to play safely in their community. They are also encouraging others to do the right thing around the road.Next stepsThe next step is to repeat this intervention on a 2-year cycle. ObstaclesThe main obstacle was that a lot of parents lead busy work lives and don't make walking with their children to and from school a priority. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by changing parents driving behaviour outside the school gate. This would be achieved by organising targeted policing of parking and promoting safe driving behaviour to parents .ConclusionThere have been immediate gains for Police within the school, as the majority of interactions are positive. The school is most proud of their students improved road sense, ability to be safe when walk unsupervised, and ability to make good decisions about when to cross the road.
