They often cross the road where they have a poor view of oncoming vehicles. Identification and prioritisationThis is an ongoing issue for the school as it has many parents who consistently let their children walk unsupervised to school. Many of the parents are seasonal and shift workers, which means that students manage themselves in getting ready for school because their parents are sleeping or leave for work very early.Short-term goalAll students will get to school safely. Long-term goalStudents road safety knowledge will be increased to ensure they manage themselves safely around roads.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment Senior students in the school were encouraged to walk with any junior students they saw walking to school unattended. Teachers identified students who were walking to school unaccompanied, and found senior students who lived close by to walk to school with them. Community connections Flyers were sent home to parents who did walk their children to school, asking them to also walk with any unsupervised students they saw on the way. Curriculum teaching and learning Junior students received safe walking lessons based on Police's  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Road Safe resources and delivered by teachers and the SCO. The lessons included how to identify a safe place to cross the road and how to cross the road safely if they were by themselves. Practical and class lessons were also followed up by teachers to consolidate students new learning.ImpactAs a result of this intervention students are now much more knowledgeable about road safety. They are using kea crossings where available, and if an adult is nearby they will walk with them on their journey to school. The students now have the knowledge to play safely in their community. They are also encouraging others to do the right thing around the road.Next stepsThe next step for this intervention is to continue on a 2-year cycle. The aim is to ensure that all students who are walking to school unsupervised have the ability to get to school safely. ObstaclesThe main obstacle is that many parents dont supervise their children as they walk to and from school. ImprovementsThe school is currently working with the local council to change a kea crossing location. The school believes that changing the location of the crossing will mean that students will use it instead of crossing further down the road. The school is sending flyers home to encourage safe driving around the school and wider community. The local radio is also running safe driving messages in the mornings to encourage drivers to be more aware of students presence on our roads.ConclusionThere have been immediate and positive gains for Police within the school, as the most interaction with students is positive. The school is most proud of the older students who are stepping up as role models and demonstrating the value of Awhi (care for) towards the younger students/siblings.
