Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment There has been ongoing collaboration between the school, the local council, Police and community organisations. Teachers participated in cycling safety training. Community connections Local cycle tour operators worked in partnership with the school. Parents were invited to attend the cycling safety training. The Cycle Action Group included Te Wharau School in their recommendations to the local council for improved cycle safety. Curriculum teaching and learning All year 1 students received walking lessons from Polices  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safe-years-0-1" Road Safe (for years 01) resource, including a practical walk through the car park. All year 5 students participated in a safe cycling course based on Police's  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safe-years-4-6" Road Safe (for years 4-6) resources. ImpactAs a result of this intervention there was increased collaboration between Police and the principal over the handling of the traffic congestion.Next stepsThe next steps for this intervention include: holding meetings with parents to encourage them to model safe alternative means of getting to school, and to gain their input into planning for physical improvements continuing to work with the local council to find engineering solutions continuing Road Safe lessons, and encouraging them to be delivered across the whole school as appropriate. ObstaclesThe main obstacle is time constraints on Police ability to always be present when it rains. The intervention has also meant adapting, after 16 years, to a new method of partnership between Police and the school. However persistence and hard work is succeeding in achieving these changes.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by involving the students at the beginning in identifying the risks to their school, thus giving them a sense of ownership of their school. This would lead into education within the classroom, and would enhance community engagement by involving the families through communication via their children.ConclusionThe school is proud of their students engagement with the cycling lessons, the improvement in their riding ability, and their increased knowledge of the law relating to cycling. This has all added to their safety on bicycles and has flowed through to their thinking in other subjects and resulted in greater consideration for each other.
