Identification and prioritisationStudents and staff involved in school traffic safety team duties noticed a number of issues, which the principal then discussed with Police.Short-term goalTo strengthen the relationship between the SCO and the school on road safety issues. Long-term goalStudents will use alternative methods of travelling safely to school, possibly including a walking school bus. Safe cycling and walking options will be improved with support from the local council.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment Teachers were included in the cycle training. Community connections The school collaborated with local cycle tour operators to run a course on safe cycling. Parents were invited to attend the cycle training. The school partnered with the preschool next door for safe passenger education. Curriculum teaching and learning Students took part in a safe cycling course. Bluelights  HYPERLINK "http://www.bluelight.co.nz/bryan---bobby.html" Bryan and Bobby provided a lesson on car restraints.ImpactAs a result of this intervention the school participated in two road safety initiatives that were supported by Police. Next stepsThe next steps are to: hold meetings with parents to encourage them to model safe alternative means of getting to school and to gain their input on ways of improving the intervention further engage with local council, continue road safety lessons, and encourage these to be delivered across the whole school as appropriate. ObstaclesThe main obstacle is time constraints for Police and devising a new method of partnership between the school and Police. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by involving the students at the beginning in identifying the risks to their school, and giving them a sense of ownership of their learning. This would lead into more effective education in the classroom and enhance community engagement by involving the families through communication through their children. ConclusionThe school is proud of their students engagement with the cycling lessons, and their improved riding ability and knowledge of the law relating to cycling all of which has added to their cycling safety. The learning has flowed through to their thinking in other subjects and to greater consideration for each other.
