Numerous laptops and i-Pads were taken, as well as stationery and food. Crime reporting statistics on school burglaries clearly identified Panama Road School as a high risk for being re-victimised in 2014.Short-term goalTo raise awareness in the school community about burglary prevention initiatives, and the effects burglary has on students, teachers and the local community.Long-term goalTo achieve a reduction in reported burglaries at the school and in the local community by the end of 20152016 (measured by crime statistics at the end of 2016).Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment A Junior Neighbourhood Support Group was started up in the school with the support of Auckland Council. A CPTED audit was conducted at the school. The school implemented Operation Serial, which included collating serial numbers for all electrical items and marking items with forensic code. The school ensured that classrooms were locked and secure at the end of each day. Community connections A Junior Neighbourhood Support Group was started up in the local community with the support of Auckland Council.. Police staff were tasked with patrolling the school on weekends and at night. Curriculum teaching and learning A  HYPERLINK "https://www.selectadna.co.nz/" Selecta DNA exercise was conducted with the students, teaching them how to apply the forensic glue and attach the sticker.  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/responsible-citizens/burglary-free" Burglary Free lessons were included in the curriculum. ImpactThe school community is now aware of the burglary issue at the school. Students have an increased knowledge of burglary-free initiatives, and how to mark equipment with the Selecta DNA kits and record serial numbers into the  HYPERLINK "https://www.snap.org.nz/About-SNAP" SNAP database. They can now use these skills at home with their own possessions.Next stepsThe school will continue to include lessons about preventing burglary in the curriculum. The school community will be informed of any Police reports of burglary.ObstaclesThe first obstacle was to gain the trust and confidence of the school community. This was overcome by the SCO being more visible in the school, teaching in the school curriculum and being involved in activities outside the school curriculum such as the schools annual cultural event. We needed to overcome discouragement, as the school was still getting burgled during the intervention. Once the CPTED audit was completed the challenge was find funds to complete the recommendations (higher fences around the school, more lights in dark areas, shrubs trimmed in dark corners and so on).Improvements The intervention would be improved by: planning more activities that involve the community surrounding Panama Road School for example, holding a community day at the school more input from school staff input on how and what to deliver in the curriculum to suit their learning goals greater student involvement so that they can identify the problem and come up with an action plan for tackling it greater involvement from other Police staff to contribute to having a burglary-free school community greater support and involvement from other supporting agencies. ConclusionThe school was pleased to have Police involvement to start up a burglary free initiative in the school community, to follow up on incidents that occur in the school, keep senior staff informed about investigations, and return stolen property to the school.
