Silvester School Community Officer SummaryAntisocial behavior.IssueAntisocial behaviour in the community that flows through to the local school.Identification and prioritisationThe principal identified a significant number of students who have behavioural problems as a result of their home environments. The principal sought some form of community-led behavioural education for students to enhance their PB4L programme. Police (including SCO, Youth Aid, Neighbourhood Policing Team, Family Violence and Intel) identified a need for intervention within the Pukekohe North area where there was a high rate of youth offending, alcohol-related offending (including family violence), drink driving, disorderly behaviour, and other types of offending.Short-term goalTo engage students with their responsibility within their community.Long-term goalBy the end of Term 3 students will know how to behave in a responsible way while in the school community and its environs.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school is part of the PB4L School-Wide framework and uses restorative processes with some success. Teaching staff are trained in PB4L and have teacher aides to assist with classroom behaviour management. The school, the Neighbourhood Policing Team and the SCO worked with all students and modelled good safe behaviour at all times to show students how to interact with each other. Community connections The Police Family Violence team is continually working with high-risk priority families. Polices Youth Aid is working with the high-risk youth. Curriculum teaching and learning Sections of  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/responsible-citizens/doing-right-thing" Doing the Right Thing and  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/responsible-citizens/burglary-free" Burglary Free were taught in all classrooms, with the assistance of the SCO, and provided opportunities for students to be aware of their actions and how they impact others. Lessons engaged students to know how they can help keep their community safe by being proactive with crime prevention. Activities included creating posters to stop tagging, how to keep their home safe from burglary, and taking found property to the school office or if in the community the local police station.ImpactA survey showed that approximately 60% of students now know they have a responsibility to their community. Approximately 70% of the students now know how they can keep themselves safe within the school environs and wider community. 70% of students can now recognise behaviour that is wrong, but at times dont know how to deal with it or know that their own behaviour is sometimes also not acceptable. Next stepsIntervention plan to be reviewed, with modifications for the following year. School and SCO will continue to work with students on social responsibility, including Choice with the senior class. School to invite Police onto their PB4L leadership team.ObstaclesThe major obstacle with this intervention plan is that the community in which the children live is low socio-economic, with many families having gang affiliations, family violence and alcohol-related problems. These impact on the children and they bring the behaviour seen at home into the school environment. ImprovementsSenior students are now showing more awareness of their responsibility in helping keep their school community safe and free from crime. An improvement would be for the junior students to also be showing some awareness of their responsibility to their school and community. Students used their art time to create anti-graffiti and anti-burglary posters that were displayed in the school and at the local diary near the school. Students are showing some willingness to speak up about things that they know are wrong, even if it does include members of their own family.ConclusionThrough this intervention, the school has partnered with Police and other community groups, and it has made some impact on the issue. This intervention will be an on-going work in progress due to the nature of the area.
