Randell School Community Officer SummaryIncreasing the safety of students outside the school gate.IssueTraffic congestion, illegal parking and unsafe crossing of the road in front of the school threatened the safety of students. This ongoing issue had become worse as the school roll reached 1000 students, all of whom exit onto the same very busy main road. The local council had previously extended the yellow road markings around the crossing and installed traffic lights to assist students to cross safely. Identification and prioritisationThe death of a student crossing a road outside school hours highlighted the need for further education within the school. The school had previously fully implemented the Police  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/programme-objectives" Road Safe programme with some junior classes. The principal suggested implementing this programme again over the entire junior school. The intervention involved school management, the board of trustees, lead teachers and the SCO. Short-term goalStudents and parents will be aware of their road safety responsibilities. Long-term goalAll students will walk safely to and from school. Parents will ensure all students are safe when they drop off and pick up their children from school.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school worked with the SCO and Auckland Transport to review the placement of the yellow road markings near the school. School staff wearing high-visibility vests were stationed on a side road to assist students across (however, this would not be sustainable as a long-term solution). Auckland Transport traffic wardens undertook enforcement duties. All members of the school traffic safety team received trained and were supervised when they were on duty. Community connections Parents/caregivers were informed by a school newsletter about the road safety education and warned that parking would be monitored by traffic wardens and Police. The school discussed signing up to the  HYPERLINK "https://at.govt.nz/cycling-walking/school-travel/travelwise/" Travelwise with Auckland Transport. Curriculum teaching and learning All junior students received both theoretical and practical lessons in road safety from the Polices  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Road Safe resources. The main emphasis was on how to walk safely near the road, how to cross the road safely and how to identify safe places to cross. ImpactAs a result of this intervention more parents and students now use the pedestrian crossings. There has been a noticeable reduction in illegal parking. Next stepsThe next steps for this intervention include: regular communication with parents through the school newsletter regular monitoring and enforcement of traffic behaviour before and after school by both traffic wardens and Police the schools signing up to Travelwise to address congestion and safety issues, and to investigate engineering to improve safety around the school. ObstaclesThe main obstacle was the reluctance of some parents to change their behaviour and accept responsibility for road safety for all students, not just their own children. It took the death of a former student to convince them that everyone has a responsibility for road safety. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by: implementing road safety education across the whole school, not just junior students involving the community more in taking ownership of student safety at the school (e.g., through parent meetings) encouraging students to do a road safety presentation at assembly to parents and students, highlighting a safety issue and a possible solution. ConclusionThe school is proud of its continued partnership with Police to address issues that affect student safety and the willingness of some parents to improve the safety of all students by changing the way they drop off and pick up their children from school.
