Students had been seen loitering around the bridge and throwing objects onto the motorway below. A side issue was graffiti on the bridge. The bridge is used regularly by members of the community and by students from a local primary school, an intermediate school and a college. Identification and prioritisationMembers of the public came to the school with concerns about student behaviour. The SCO spoke with the deputy principal because of an increasing number of complaints to Police about student behaviour on the overbridge after school. Short-term goalThe number of complaints to Police about student behaviour on the overbridge will be reduced. Long-term goalStudents will cross the bridge sensibly and safely.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment After the death of a motorist a few years earlier, the Auckland Council had already improved all local bridges by installing cages. Surrounding vegetation was cut back and the council was approached with a proposal that the Manukau Beautification Trust paint out graffiti within the area. A school staff member monitored the overbridge after school. Community connections The school, the community and Police worked together to eliminate this issue. Parents of students were informed through the school newsletter about the issue and asked to speak to their children about it. Police spoke to parents and students on the overbridge after school. The school approached Auckland Transport about signing up for  HYPERLINK "https://at.govt.nz/cycling-walking/school-travel/travelwise/" Travelwise. Curriculum teaching and learning Students received classroom lessons from Police's  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Road Safe resources on road safety and practical safe walking outside the school. Police spoke to students at assembly to support the school with safety messages. ImpactStudents are no longer loitering on the overbridge and there have been no further complaints to Police.Next stepsThe next steps for this intervention include: regular communication to parents through the school newsletter reminders at assembly about expected behaviour when crossing the overbridge intermittent stops by Police to speak to students using the overbridge an agreement by the school to inform Police if the problem recurs monitoring of the overbridge for graffiti and liaison with the Auckland Council.ObstaclesThe school could not sustain releasing a staff to monitor the overbridge every day. This was overcome by Police also spending short periods of time on the overbridge when they could. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by getting students more involved in identifying the risks to themselves and others caused by the problem behaviour.ConclusionThe school is proud of the support it has received from the community and Police to identify and effectively address an issue that affected the safety of students and the general public.
