The Social Worker in School worked closely with the truant students and their families. Police and the local truancy agency made joint weekly visits to recidivist truants from the school. A parent education sheet on truancy was developed and distributed to all parents of students at the school. This was translated into four languages English, Samoan, Tongan and Hindi. The sheet outlined the requirements of the Education Act and parental responsibilities under the law. Operation Back to School was implemented for the first three weeks after each term break. The schools pastoral care team met weekly to review attendance data and identify students who were at risk of truancy or required monitoring. Community connections Through visits, posters and information the local shops were encouraged to report any students whom they observed in school uniform during school hours. The community was encouraged through the newsletter and Police/community interaction to report any students in school uniform whom they observed outside of school during school hours. Curriculum teaching and learning The school follows the PB4L process, which has been a part of school process review since 2010.ImpactAttendance levels in the school increased. With the weekly joint visits by Police and Strive (the local truancy agency) the incidence of truancy decreased over the year. Reviewing and improving school processes to minimise truancy has resulted in closer contact with Strive. Next stepsThe next steps are to keep the truancy levels down for 2016 by continuing all he actions implemented this year, and to continue monitoring and review.ObstaclesA new Social Worker in School was appointed halfway through the year, which disrupted the continuity of the work with the SCO and the SWIS. Sometimes it was difficult for the school to get hold of the SCO.Improvements The intervention could be improved by implementing specific truancy projects and ideas, such as  HYPERLINK "http://www.truancynzctdts.com/rock-on-overview.html" Rock On. A regular monthly meeting between Police, theschool, the SWIS and the truancy service would improve the sharing of information and deciding next steps.ConclusionThe school hopes to keep progressing with the strategies implemented this year and work with the SCO and the truancy agency in 2016 to decrease the truancy rate every term.
