Identification and prioritisationThe school and Police identified that incidents of bullying through social media were occurring between the students of this and another school. The school guidance counsellor reported that the number of visits from victims of cyberbullying had increased. The school wanted to educate students about their responsibilities and accountability.Short-term goalTo design and deliver a series of student-led learning activities to all year 9 students. Long-term goalTo reduce the number of students reporting as victims of cyberbullying.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment School staff monitored 'hot spots' around the school where students had indicated bullying occurred. The school reviewed its policy on bullying to ensure that it included cyberbullying. Staff discussed the extent of a schools responsibility when cyberbullying occurs outside school hours. All staff were made aware of the programme being taught, and what procedures to follow if they received a complaint of cyberbullying. Community connections Parents were informed by newsletter about: the signs indicating a student may be the victim of cyberbullying, what action to take, and how to help prevent bullying the support available to them on the NetSafe website the Harmful Digital Communications Bill and its implications. The school worked with a representative from an internet service provider, who came and spoke to the students. Curriculum teaching and learning A series of modern student-based and led learning activities was designed, which included definitions of bullying, scenarios, explanation of bullying as a criminal offence, and what victims and other parties could do. The sessions were delivered to all year 9 students. ImpactAs a result of this intervention students discussed this issue openly and explored myths surrounding the topic. Next stepsThe next steps are to: deliver the lessons on a yearly basis to all year 9 students revisit the issue with years 1113 students to reinforce past messages increase the collaboration between the SCO and the school guidance counsellor in order to help resolve cyber safety issues .ObstaclesSome students were unable to empathise with the topic and did not see the seriousness of the discussions. Some students said they did not feel confident that if they spoke up, the school would make changes to the environment in which the bullying was occurring (e.g., at the tuck shop) to prevent further incidents.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by: involving the students in identifying the problem and possible solutions e.g., displaying student-made posters around the school having more senior student mentors introducing a more streamlined system of reporting conducting a pre-lesson survey on what students see as the main issues in bullying, and where and when they occur.ConclusionThe school is most proud of the impact of the lessons in particular, that several students identified themselves as using bullying behaviour and sought help from the guidance counsellor.
