Identification and prioritisationPolice have dealt with a number of complaints where young people had been manoeuvred into situations where they were pressured to have sex when they didnt want to. The issue was identified and prioritised by the school staff, counsellors, Police intelligence staff, CIB, Youth Aid, and the SCO.Short-term goalTo develop a plan for deciding which group of students to address, who would address the issue, and when. This plan for identifying the groups in need of the intervention will be ongoing. A group of senior students was identified and spoken to by the end of 2014, but in consultation with the school it has been decided to extend this process into 2015 with groups identified as circumstances arise, for example at the time of the school ball. Long-term goalTo address groups with specific needs in terms of relationships. These needs will be identified by the Principal in discussion with teachers, counsellors, students, and agencies such as Police and health organisations. The issue of sexual pressure will be discussed regularly throughout the school year as well as before events where it is likely to be a factor (such as the school ball) or when incidents that cause concern arise. Appropriate interventions will be identified for each occasion. Some are in use and have been actioned in 2014 (e.g., CIB talking to students about the laws on sexuality). The success of all these interventions will be measured by fewer reports of problems at the conclusion of the identified times of risk (i.e., no trouble reported during or after the school ball). These reports will be gathered from Police intelligence staff, Youth Aid, and the school and its community.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment Many discussions took place between the school and Police groups. The school policy on abuse, including harassment, has been revised and updated. The schools physical environment has been targeted and identified problem locations have received extra staff attention. Parents are informed by letter when sex education will take place so that they can play their part in this education. Community connections This is being discussed with all parties, including parents, for the beginning of 2015. Police (CIB) have been requested to give talks when particular issues and ages have been identified. The possibility of including adults who may have been involved in sexual/drug issues has been discussed. Initiatives such as the  HYPERLINK "http://www.theparentingplace.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=77&Itemid=1026" Attitude Programme are being used. Curriculum teaching and learning A Police detective spoke to year 13 students. Feedback from staff and students was very positive. A peer intervention system has been encouraged to enable students to take charge of each others behaviour. ImpactTime will show how far the intervention will lower reported cases of inappropriate sexual behaviour. The number of incidents will be monitored by the school counsellor, Police intelligence staff and Youth Aid. Next stepsOngoing discussion is needed on how to take the intervention forward and make it a regular part of what the school does. ObstaclesIt was difficult to find enough time to implement the measures and to effectively inform and coordinate everyone involved. The SCOs support helped to address this. ImprovementsThe school hopes the ice has been broken for all concerned. ConclusionThe school is proud of making a start on a difficult process.
