Identification and prioritisationThe school sought Police support to implement  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-5" Keeping Ourselves Safe to contribute to the interventions already put in place by the school, Board of Trustees, parents and the wider school community after a staff member was charged with sexual offending against a number of students.Short-term goalStudents who have been victims of abuse and their whnau will be supported through the court process and provided with assistance and advice as required. Long-term goalThe whole school community will agree to a set of values for positive behaviour to ensure the future safety and well-being of students. The school community will ensure that all whnau take responsibility for their role in preventing abuse.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school underwent a reconstruction, which it viewed as a big part of the affected students rehabilitation, as they no longer were in the classrooms where the offending had taken place. Security cameras were installed to keep students safe and enhance their feeling of safety and well-being. Community connections The deputy principal prepared an ACC-funded programme for the victims and whnau that prepared them for the court process. The board of trustees funded and worked with the deputy principal to arrange individual, group and in-home counselling for the victims for as long as required. Senior students completed the Ahu Rei programme run by Waikato DHB on 1 day per week for 10 weeks. Curriculum teaching and learning Keeping Ourselves Safe was implemented up to year 7. Years 9 and 10 students completed lessons on cyber safety and stereotyping to address the behaviour of a few students and to enhance the relationship between senior students and Police.ImpactAs a result of this intervention all agencies involved constantly and consistently reinforced the key messages of Keeping Ourselves Safe. Next stepsThe next steps are to continue developing a school environment in which students safety is not compromised and members of the school community feel able to disclose abuse. ObstaclesThe disruption caused by the rebuilding meant that some of the classrooms were without the technology required to play DVDs, but this was overcome by setting up the equipment in the hall and students moving to the one location for lessons.
