A lot of heavy traffic travels along this road because of the amount of building and redevelopment in the Tamaki area. The intersection where the pedestrian crossing is situated also has a block of busy shops and parking next to it. The school has 40km signs, but speed was still a concern. The road will become busier, as Auckland City Council is going to redevelop more land in the Tamaki ward. Not enough students are volunteering to become school patrollers. Identification and prioritisationThe pedestrian crossing was old and poorly marked due to faded paint and old signage. It was important to notify Auckland Transport first so they could assess the crossing before the end of the financial year, and get any repairs or funding approved for their budget for 2017-2018.Short-term goalTo have engineers assess the crossing and the effect of the parking area outside the block of shops, and make recommendations for the next financial year budget. To train more school patrollers to cover shortfall. To monitor speed outside the school.Long-term goalTo upgrade the pedestrian crossing into a set of traffic lights with a crossing phase. To have old signage replaced and lines repainted. To improve parking outside the shops so patrollers can see the approaching traffic better. To have speed reduce outside the school due to better visibility of crossing, and with Police presence as a deterrant. To improve the rosters for patrollers in order to retain current patrollers, and to introduce a reward system for patrollers during the year. To ensure the school is included in correspondence with the Tamaki area build, as this will affect number of students who use the crossing and the businesses on Tripoli Road. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) The school updated the school patrol reward system to cover the entire year, offering Milo in the winter and iceblocks in the summer. A teacher was given overall control of the school patrols, to whom all incidents were to be reported, so that they could forward the reports to be followed up in a timely manner by Police, and inform Auckland Transport of any incidents. Long term goals to make the pedestrian crossing safer were discussed and agreed upon. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) Important community relationships were strengthened through parents and the school attending the same community meetings, in which they agreed that the redevelopment would have major implications on the school and community. Auckland Transport were made aware of the issues in the community that will affect the school, via their incident reporting line and through discussions at the Auckland Transport/Police liaison meetings that occur monthly. Parents were encouraged to get their children to volunteer for school patrols, and to ensure their children turned up for duties. Contact was made with the Establishment Manager of the Tamaki regeneration project to consider including a set of traffic lights at the site in their plans. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) Younger students (Years 45) were selected and trained to work on the school patrol these students were identified by their individual teachers as being reliable and responsible in such duties. Patrollers were made aware of the current issues around the pedestrian crossing and the Tamaki area that will affect them. This gave students the knowledge to protect themselves better on the crossing. The junior school continued to teach  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Road Safety, as most students (and the community) use the crossing. ImpactA major upgrade of the pedestrian crossing is now taking place. This includes the intersection road, footpath and kerb being improved outside the shops, and the upgrade of the pedestrian crossing with a new refuge island, anti-skid seal, signage and repainting of road markings. Due to extra patrollers being trained, there are more patrollers to provide cover for absences, less pressure for students and the rewards throughout the year may keep them motivated longer. Ongoing refresher training and education at school patrol training day has given students the skills, confidence and understanding that they require to work as a patroller at this school, making them safer. Next stepsContinue monitoring the amount of traffic as the Tamaki area redevelopmnent begins over the next few years. Running regular refresher training for patrollers. Continuing to appeal for traffic lights instead of a pedestrian crossing, and including Sommerville Special School in this request. Ensuring that Police units monitor traffic outside this school and within a one-kilometer radius.ObstaclesThe biggest obstacle was budget. Auckland Transport acknowledged that the road is busy, and would benefit from a set of lights. However, they wanted to try the option of upgrading the pedestrian crossing first, as lights do not always fix a problem. ImprovementsThe school will continue with rewards throughout the year, and will possibly look for a local business to donate a few rewards.ConclusionThrough this intervention, we have an upgraded pedestrian crossing. The visibility for patrollers has improved as the road, footpaths, signage and parking spaces have been made better.
