IssueIndividuals were coming into the school and the community surrounding the school and committing illegal activity or public nuisance behaviour at the busy shopping area close to the school. The Principal had spoken to a few students who reported to him that they were harrassed on the way to school and after school. He felt that students were unsure as to what they should do or where to seek help. Because many of the incidents were after hours, the Principal had not been notified by Police, so was unaware of what was going on in his school after hours. Identification and prioritisationIssue identified through: SMS: Reports from students and staff. Parents: Parents have emailed the principal to warn him about events that have happened to students from other local schools. Some reports may have been exaggerated by parents. Students: Students from the schools in the area regularly do  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping" Keeping Ourselves Safe, so should have had the basic skills to seek help. Police data: Regular intelligence reports give occurrences at the school. Short-term goalWithin the first term after this intervention, students will know where to seek assistance if needed. Communication between Police and the school will be improved so as the Principal is provided with information about incidents relevant to the school.Long-term goalStudents will be be more aware and perceptive of their surroundings, so they can identify high risk situations and prevent harassment. Prevention activitiesSchool ethos and environment Policies: Police helped review the schools policies. Principal was supportive of students who feel confident to approach him for assistance. Skilled Staff: All staff worked with Police during the intervention, and offered alternative action for students if needed. Safe environment: Students learned what helping services are offered in their community. Students considered the impact on their community of outsiders visiting local attractions. Community connections Consultation: Principal updated parents on any issues that arose. Collaboration: Local shops and restaurants have been identified by students as a place to ask for help. Their staff are aware and will assist students when asked. My friends: Teaching programme covered showing concern for myself and others. My community: Students could identify several local shops to seek assistance, how to ask for help, and who to call. ImpactSMS: Reporting to principal/parents/Police is more efficient. Parents: Open lines of communication continue. Principal checks with SCO/Police first to validate any incidents, and organises response if necessary. Students: Students have raised awareness, and are reminded of basics that they have learnt previous years. Police data: All Auckland City SCOs now receive daily emails to update all incidents in schools that are reported to Police. This has helped to share information with schools about crime occurring in and around them. Next stepsThis intervention plan will be reviewed for follow up in two years. Complaints to Police from businesses surrounding the school will be monitored to check suitability to assist students.
