This was prioritised after a person attempted to grab school children on an access way to the school. The offender was arrested and charged.Short-term goalTo complete a review of the physical school environment to increase safety of children and staff when at school.Long-term goalTo reduce the number of reports of of tagging, indecency and drug use on school grounds, to no more than one every six months.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) Policies were reviewed by BOT and senior staff, and the implemention of  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping" Keeping Ourselves Safe (KOS) was discussed. Skilled staff training by principal and Police on how to deal with safety around possible offenders, thus promoting safety for kids and increasing awareness of staff. School staff spoken to individually and in groups by Police on how to deal with suspicious persons, with an emphasis on personal safety. Safe environment some changes implemented or investigated, including restricting access to the school, CCTV cameras, signs clearly showing school territory and made multi-lingual. Fences were repaired and bushes cut back to increase attractiveness, prevent areas to hide in, and to increase natural surveillance. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) Parents were informed verbally about the issue through the children and teachers, and encouraged to make contact with Police if anything untoward was observed. Working with a neighbouring bowling club to use a locked gate to ensure only club members could get through to their hall on the school grounds. Increased patrols by Police and local security, including monitoring in school holidays. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) Children spoken to by Principal at an assembly on how to deal with the issue of personal safety, which was reinforced by teachers in the classroom. Children asked to report any persons they dont know on or around school grounds.ImpactIncidents declined markedly, with only one incident reported to local Police in the last month, compared to four or more incidents in previous month.Next stepsEnsure that preventative patrolling is continued by the caretaker and also by the schools security. Erect surveillance cameras.ObstaclesThe main risk is dependency on the school caretaker, who lives very close to the school and is very vigilant in his surveillance of the school. If he were to leave, the incidence of vagrancy may increase. The need is to build greater natural surveillance, and to encourage the local neighbourhood to report concerns to Police. Cost of cameras. The school will need to look at fundraising through local businesses/community.ImprovementsWill need to look more at the thoroughfare issue, as whilst blocking entrances keeps out offenders, it is also a hindrance to other members of public. Increased input from Police to reinforce the message to children and staff through regular talks at school assemblies. Regular planned meetings to keep the school up-to-date with reports of suspicious persons in the area.ConclusionThrough this intervention the school have partnered with Police and the community to reduce the incidence of offending in their grounds. As this is an ongoing intervention, we will need more time to see if it has worked - hopefully in six months we will see a marked improvement as per the long term goal.
