The problem was clearly observable on any school day. The road outside the school is a busy bypass leading to the main hospital and the Auckland CBD. Most of the 2500 students attending the school cross the road outside the school before and after school hours. The problem is heightened by traffic congestion both morning and afternoon as parents arrive all at once to drop off or pick up their sons. The school rated this issue a 9/10 (high risk) on the Police School Profile for 2014.Short-term goalTo increase the safety of students crossing the road outside the school gates.Long-term goalTo change the current road crossings in front of the school through consultation and cooperation with Auckland Transport.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school changed its rules for where students are and are not allowed to cross the road outside the gates. These rule changes prevented students from crossing at a dangerous intersection. The SCO drew up a detailed report of all the crossing issues outside the school and submitted it to Auckland Transport. Auckland Transport conducted detailed surveys of the local roading environment and ran internal engineering workshops to prioritise the issues. Its next step will be to hold an external stakeholders workshop. All four of the school gates are supervised by teachers wearing high-visibility vests. Another teacher supervises the road intersection near Gate 4 to ensure that students cross 70 m further down the side road. The school regularly reminded the students that they need to show responsible pedestrian behaviour when walking to and from school. The school is is a member of Auckland Transports HYPERLINK "https://at.govt.nz/cycling-walking/school-travel/travelwise/" Travelwise programme. The deputy headmaster, wearing a high-visibility vest, monitors students crossing the road after school at a designated crossing point. From time to time he will step out onto the road to temporarily stop traffic while students are crossing. Although this is an illegal practice, it is at present the only safe way for students to cross the road at this point. Community connections 250 parents were surveyed on safety issues when travelling to and from school. The most common responses were dangerous pedestrian crossing points, congestion, and no parking areas where parents could stop. The results of the survey were collated and forwarded to Auckland Transport. Regular messages are placed in the online school newsletter asking for parents cooperation when parking near the school. Auckland Transport has placed the school on a priority list for parking enforcement to address poor parent parking behaviour. Auckland Transport has included the nearby high school in the project, as it has similar issues that contribute to the traffic congestion in the area. A Board of Trustees member has encouraged safety changes around the school and has written submissions to the local authority to support this. Police have supported the school by creating a high-visibility presence (especially after school) on the road outside the main school gate. Curriculum teaching and learning All year 10 students completed a Health lesson in on safe walking (and road safety in general) to support the year 10 lessons on road safety. Auckland Transport ran a student workshop focusing on sustainable safe transport (cycle safety, safe walking. and the use of public transport).ImpactThe project has heightened awareness of the need for safe places for students to cross the road. Until these crossings are established the major change has been that students no longer cross at a hazardous location. Next stepsThe next steps are now with Auckland Transport to engage with the school, Police, and the local board to implement safety changes outside the school gates. Funds have been allocated for this and construction is expected to start mid-2015.ObstaclesThe main obstacle has been Auckland Transport 's slowness in consulting with stakeholders. Our only recourse is to regularly enquire about progress and bring up the issue at the monthly PoliceAuckland Transport liaison meetings. Another obstacle, caused by the schools crowded timetable, has been to get safety education into the classroom at levels other than year 10, but efforts are continuing. ImprovementsThis intervention would have been more effective with greater student input into suggesting changes, as well as using the prefects to educate others when on duty at the school gate.ConclusionThis intervention is not complete, so the results have not been evaluated. However, the school is pleased with how students have adapted to the increased walking distance to help them keep themselves safe.
