Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment A student-run cyber action committee was started, which included students from different years. The deputy principal, the cyber action committee and the SCO met and discussed ways to make the school more cyber safe. The school policy on cyberbullying and internet use was updated. Curriculum teaching and learning Every student year group had an assembly on cyber safety. A few classes had follow-up lessons with the SCO, while others had health and computer class lessons on cyberbullying. Students in years 9 and 10 completed a unit of work on digital citizenship, which included the topic of cyberbullying.ImpactThe intervention made students more aware of online issues. Teachers heard students talk about how they were going to update their security on their social media pages. The intervention also encouraged student involvement in the cyber action committee, and helped the staff digital citizenship group come up with some innovative ways to engage students in 2015. Next stepsThe next step is to raise awareness of internet safety issues by involving all years 9 and 10 students in 2015 in an inquiry project based on digital citizenship. This will include sessions with Police.ObstaclesThe main obstacle was the difficulty of implementing all the planned prevention activities into an already busy school schedule.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by planning the school timetable earlier and allowing more time for class work, as assemblies are not the best forum for learning.ConclusionStudents are more aware of the need to take care online, and that everything they do can be monitored.
