Karaka School Community OfficerSummaryPreventing students from being assaulted on their way to school.IssueStudents were being assaulted on their way to school, mainly in two specific locations. The rate of apprehending and identifying offenders was very low. Students were unsure about what to do. They often wore head phones so they couldn't hear offenders approach, had their eyes buried in mobile phones so didn't see offenders coming, and were unable to identify possible vulnerable areas on their routes to school.Identification and prioritisationThe issue was identified and prioritised through reports to Police of assaults, some of a sexual nature and some to enable theft of property. This intervention was developed by a group that included the associate principal, outside security, Police intelligence staff, community police, the SCO and students. Short-term goalStudents will report assaults and suspicious people more efficiently. Students will adopt safe walking practices and identify risks in their environment. Long-term goalThere will be fewer assaults. Offenders will be identified more often in case of any assault. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment A reporting system has been created at the school to ensure that all complaints of assault are logged and followed up. Teachers are placed at vulnerable areas on days when students start school later. Student walking groups have been set up and supported. Community connections Police have increased patrols of the area at vulnerable times. Security personnel have been made aware of the problem and have increased staff visibility at vulnerable times. Auckland Transport has made the street more open by cutting back foliage and repairing or making brighter the lighting of surrounding streets. Parents have been notified through newsletters. Students have learned about reporting crime and suspicious behaviour, personal safety awareness and safe walking practices. Cyber safety has also been included, as some incidents involved the theft of mobile phones or organised violence through social media. ImpactAs a result of the intervention: suspicious persons have been reported more often to Police and the school students feel more confident if they have to deal with violence or suspicious persons.Next stepsThe next steps for this intervention is for the: Police to continue regular education and update students about current trends in street crime offences school to support safe walking groups for students (including for sporting activities because training times are outside normal school times). ObstaclesThe obstacles were: limited Police resources for prevention patrols during the times when assaults most frequent ownership by the school of the issue, especially by supporting the safe walking groups for students and encouraging students to take control and email Police directly about any concerns or questions. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by: beginning safety education in Term 1 instead of Term 3, to start the year off with a consistent message and the tools to prevent attacks gaining more participation by students, especially in forming safe walking groups. This would also encourage a better sense of community within the school. Students could help prevent crime by identify and reporting to Police and the school any areas or persons that make them feel unsafe. ConclusionThe school is proud of the better reporting system it has developed and that students feel more confident in dealing with situations of risk.
