This school was identified as one of the top 10 most burgled schools in Auckland. This intervention was developed by a group that included the principal, associate principal, Police intelligence staff, community police, the SCO, school management and the Ministry of Education. Short-term goalTo improve security within the school. To encourage the community to participate in reporting suspicious activity.Long-term goalTo reduce burglaries, thefts and damage to school property. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The Ministry of Education held a security audit of the school that made many recommendations, including improving lighting, security alarms and locks, and making vulnerable areas in the school less accessible. The school participates in the BNZ Safer Schools programme. The school has improved its reporting to Police of theft of property and burglary to the school. Community connections Police have increased patrols of the area at vulnerable times. Community police regularly target local offenders, and trespass any suspicious persons or suspected burglars. Housing NZ is notified every time a search is done at a known offender's property, or stolen property is found at their home, providing evidence to evict local offenders. A community meeting was held to address the issues. Parents were notified of the issues and were invited to the community meeting. Curriculum teaching and learning Book Week was used as an opportunity to involve people from the community to read books about the issues, which allowed the students to discuss who can help, how they feel about crime occurring in their school, and what they can do to participate in keeping their school safe and burglary free. ImpactAs a result of the intervention: the school has better systems and protocols for the security of electrical goods when not in use. fewer burglaries have been reported offenders and suspects are being trespassed by Police. Next stepsThe next steps for this intervention is for the: school and its neighbourhood community to participate in crime prevention in their community and at the school Ministry of Education to fund measures recommended by the security audit.ObstaclesOffenders in the burglaries live close to the school, so they can choose prime times for committing offences. However, regular reports to Housing NZ may result in their eviction. Some offenders are students from the school. If students feel ownership of the school they will be motivated to protect school property and report any theft. The community surrounding the school mistrust Police, so are not very forthcoming with information and assistance. Police can strengthen these relationships by engaging with the community in a positive way, such as attending events held by the school and community.ImprovementsThe intervention would be more effective if offenders could be identified and targeted earlier in order to prevent possible crimes.ConclusionThe school is proud that the incidence of burglary has been reduced and security is to be improved, making it safer for students and staff.
